About On-Grid Rooftop Solar

An on-grid solar rooftop system, also known as a grid-tied solar system, is a setup that allows you to generate electricity using solar panels installed on your rooftop. Here’s how it works: Solar Panels Installation: You install solar panels on your rooftop. These panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through photovoltaic cells. Electricity Generation: When sunlight hits the solar panels, they generate direct current (DC) electricity. This electricity can be used to power your home or business. Inverter Conversion: The DC electricity from the solar panels is then sent to an inverter. The inverter converts DC electricity into alternating current (AC), which is the type of electricity used in most homes and businesses. Grid Connection: The AC electricity produced by the solar panels is connected directly to the local utility grid. This means that any excess electricity generated beyond what you need can be fed back into the grid. Net Metering: During sunny days, if your solar panels produce more electricity than you consume, the excess power is sent back to the grid. This process is known as net metering. Your electricity meter runs backward when you’re exporting power, effectively crediting you for the surplus energy. Using Grid Power: When your solar panels don’t produce enough electricity (such as during nighttime or cloudy days), you draw power from the grid. The grid acts as a backup source, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.

Benefits of On-Grid Solar Systems

Cost Savings: By generating your own electricity, you reduce your reliance on grid power, leading to lower electricity bills. Environmental Impact: Solar energy is clean and renewable, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Grid Stability: On-grid systems contribute to grid stability by balancing supply and demand. No Battery Storage Required: Unlike off-grid systems, on-grid setups don’t require expensive battery storage. Remember that on-grid solar systems are most effective in areas with reliable grid connectivity. If you’re considering rooftop solar, explore the National Portal for Rooftop Solar launched by the Indian government. It provides information, guidelines, and resources for implementing solar rooftop projects

Eligibility Criteria for Rooftop Solar Scheme

Applicants should be residents of India. Applicants should belong to poor and middle-income households. Applicants should have their own residence with a roof suitable for installing solar panels. Applicants must have a valid electricity connection. Applicants should not have availed of any other subsidy for solar panels1.

Subsidies for Installing Solar Panels

Under the Rooftop Solar Scheme, the government provides the following subsidies for installing solar panels: For up to 2 kW: Rs. 30,000 per kW. For additional capacity up to 3 kW: Rs. 18,000 per kW. Total subsidy for systems larger than 3 kW: Maximum Rs. 78,000.

Rooftop Solar Step-by-Step Process

1. Register on the National Portal: Visit the National Portal for Rooftop Solar. Submit your application for rooftop solar installation.
2. Feasibility Approval: Your application will be forwarded to the concerned DISCOM (Distribution Company) for technical feasibility assessment. Once you receive feasibility approval, proceed to the next step.
3. Installation by Registered Vendors: Choose any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM area. Get the solar plant installed by the selected vendor.
4. Submit Plant Details and Apply for Net Meter: After installation, submit the plant details. Apply for a net meter to connect your solar system to the grid.
